Turning “Marine Debris” into Something Valuable
In addition to the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse),Upcycling has also become more common in recent years.
Upcycling meanstransforming things that are no longer usedinto something better and increasing their value.
Anyone can upcycle, and what you create depends on you.
Each person’s actions may be small, but if everyone takes action on what they can do “now“,it will lead us toward solving the marine debris problem.
If more people see the marine debris problem as their ownand join hands to take action on what they can do “now”,
I hope for a future
where the amount of waste producedby each person gradually decreases.
Nice to meet you.My name is Abiru, the founder of AHORA.
Since May 2024,I have been upcycling marine debrisin Tsushima, Nagasaki, creating works under the name “AHORA.”
“AHORA” means “now” in Spanish.
Amid the marine debris crisis happening “now,”I want people to think about what we should do “now”and take action through the act of creating.
That is the meaning behind the name.
What I’ve realized while creating with marine debrisis that what we usually call “marine waste”is actually a resource and a material, not “trash.”
With a bit of creativity and craftsmanship,it can be transformed into something valuable and beautiful.
The colors created by marine plastics are truly one-of-a-kind.
I hope to create a new sense of value—something that doesn’t look like “marine debris” at all.

Daiki Abiru(Abiru Daiki)
Born in Osaka Prefecture, currently living in Tsushima, Nagasaki.I have dived in oceans around the world as a scuba diver and freediver, and lived a lifestyle called “address hopper,” traveling around Japan while working.Through these experiences, the issue of marine debris became evident to me, and I am now creating works based in Tsushima, where a large amount of ocean waste washes ashore.I dedicate myself every day to transforming marine debris into valuable, usable items.
